Typical Causes of Varicosities in the Vulva | UVVC

3 common causes of vulvar varicosities

Ever heard of varicose veins? They’re the veins that become damaged and defunct, causing large, bulging veins to show up most commonly on the backs of the legs. Damaged or improperly functioning veins are called varicosities. Varicosities happen in the legs most often, but they can also show up in other areas of the body.

For example, vulvar varicosities are damaged and defunct veins that occur in the vulva. They can cause large and swollen veins to appear in the vulva and surrounding areas. People with this condition most often report pain or discomfort caused by these enlarged veins, and they experience trouble sitting, standing for long periods of time, and walking. It most often occurs in those who are pregnant, but the specific reasons for this condition during pregnancy can vary. To learn more about what may cause vulvar varicosities during pregnancy, keep reading below.

What are some of the most common causes of vulvar varicosities?

  • An increase in the size of the uterus — An increase in the size of the uterus can spur vulvar varicosities in some pregnant women. During pregnancy, the uterus expands to accommodate the fetus, which is also growing in size.
  • An increase in the amount of blood flow to the pelvis — Another effect of pregnancy is an increase in the amount of blood that flows to the pelvis. This increase in circulation can cause the veins in your vulva to work overtime and cause them to become damaged from excess stress.
  • Any changes in hormone levels — Most everyone knows that pregnancy causes fluctuations in hormones, which, interestingly enough, can affect the linings of the veins in your vulva.
