Severe Leg Swelling & Pain Were Affecting Diana’s Life

Leg swelling can gradually become more than an inconvenience. When swelling is accompanied by pain, tenderness, or hardness, it can begin affecting where someone goes, how comfortably they move, and whether they feel able to participate in everyday activities.

For Diana L., the swelling in her legs had reached that point. Her left leg and ankle would become significantly enlarged, at times reaching nearly twice their normal size. Her left leg also felt hard and painful, while her right leg and ankle were swelling as well, although not to the same degree.

After her symptoms continued despite previous efforts to manage them, Diana sought care at United Vein & Vascular Centers in Buckhead, Atlanta, where she was evaluated by Dr. Arthur James and began a vein treatment plan.

When Leg Swelling Begins Changing Your Plans

Before coming to UVVC, Diana’s swelling had become increasingly difficult to control. Anti-inflammatory medications were no longer providing enough help, and she had previously sought treatment elsewhere as her symptoms worsened.

The swelling in her left leg was especially severe. Diana described hardness and pain that made walking and other everyday activities more difficult. Ice, rest, and elevating her feet helped her manage the symptoms, but the swelling continued to interfere with her routine.

Leg swelling can have many possible causes. When it persists or occurs alongside symptoms such as aching, heaviness, tenderness, or visible vein changes, a vein screening can help determine whether an underlying vein condition may be contributing.

For Diana, seeking specialized vein care was an opportunity to better understand what was happening and take the next step toward managing symptoms that had already begun limiting her daily life.

Diana’s Vein Treatment Experience

Following her evaluation, Diana underwent vein ablation treatment at the Buckhead clinic. Vein ablation refers to minimally invasive vein procedures used to close affected veins that are not circulating blood properly. Once an affected vein closes, blood can naturally reroute through healthier nearby veins.

Treatment recommendations are individualized based on factors such as a patient’s symptoms, vein anatomy, ultrasound findings, medical history, and provider evaluation.

After treatment, Diana said her swelling became easier to manage, even though it has not disappeared completely.

“My legs still swell, but the left doesn’t swell up beyond two times its size,” she shared.

Diana said she can now better control the remaining swelling with measures including ice, rest, and anti-inflammatory medications.

Getting Back to Shopping, Functions, and Everyday Activities

For Diana, one of the clearest changes has been what she is able to do despite the swelling that remains.

Before treatment, the combination of swelling and pain kept her from attending certain functions and made routine activities such as shopping difficult. These were not simply symptoms she noticed at the end of the day; they were beginning to determine what she could comfortably participate in.

Now, Diana says she is able to attend functions again and go shopping without the same pain that previously accompanied her swelling.

Her experience also reflects an important distinction in vein treatment: improvement does not always mean every symptom disappears completely. Diana continues to manage some swelling, but she describes it as significantly more manageable and less disruptive to her daily life.

A Care Team That Stayed Responsive to Her Questions

Diana’s experience at the Buckhead clinic also stood out because of the way she felt her concerns were handled throughout care.

She described the team’s customer service as excellent and specifically praised their friendliness and professionalism. When she had questions about physical changes or her results, she said staff members were eager to answer them or make sure Dr. James responded.

That responsiveness mattered to Diana. She said it demonstrated “true concern for patients’ medical outcomes.”

Why Diana Recommends the Buckhead Team

Diana’s recommendation to others is straightforward.

She said she “highly recommends” United Vein & Vascular Centers in Buckhead and described Dr. Arthur James and his staff as “the best.” She also encouraged future patients to carefully follow the instructions they receive for procedure preparation and aftercare, advice that reflects the importance she placed on being an active participant throughout her treatment.

Why Diana’s Story Matters

Diana’s experience highlights how persistent leg swelling can affect more than physical comfort when it begins interfering with everyday life. Her symptoms did not disappear completely, but she reports less pain, more manageable swelling, and the ability to return to activities that had become difficult before treatment.

If you are experiencing persistent leg swelling, pain, heaviness, or other changes in your legs, schedule a vein screening with United Vein & Vascular Centers to learn whether your symptoms may be related to vein disease and what next steps may be appropriate for you.
