What is a Duplex Ultrasound?
A duplex ultrasound is a non-invasive imaging test that allows your physician to see both the structure of your blood vessels and how blood flows through them in real time.

This test helps identify the source of symptoms such as:
- Leg pain or cramping
- Swelling in the legs or ankles

How Does Duplex Ultrasound Work?
A duplex ultrasound combines two types of ultrasound technology:
1. Traditional Ultrasound
Creates detailed images of your veins and arteries.
2. Doppler Ultrasound
Measures the speed and direction of blood flow within those vessels.
Together, these technologies allow our vascular specialists to:
- Detect faulty vein valves
- Identify blood clots
- Measure narrowed or blocked arteries
- Evaluate circulation problems
- Pinpoint the exact source of symptoms
Because the test shows blood flow in real time, it gives your physician precise information to guide treatment planning.
What Conditions Can Duplex Ultrasound Diagnose?
Duplex ultrasound is commonly used to evaluate:
Venous Conditions
- Varicose veins
- Chronic venous insufficiency (CVI)
- Deep vein thrombosis (DVT)
- Spider veins (when underlying disease is suspected)
Arterial Conditions
- Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD)
- Atherosclerosis
- Reduced blood flow to the legs
- Circulatory blockages
This diagnostic step ensures treatment is medically appropriate and targeted, not cosmetic or unnecessary.
What to Expect During Your Appointment
A duplex ultrasound is performed in-office and is non-invasive, painless, and radiation-free.
During the test:
1. You’ll stand comfortably on an exam table.
2. A clear gel is applied to the skin.
3. A small handheld device (transducer) is moved over the area being examined.
4. Images and blood flow measurements appear instantly on the screen.
The test typically takes 30 minutes.
You can return to normal activities immediately afterward.
