What is a Duplex Ultrasound?

A duplex ultrasound is a non-invasive imaging test that allows your physician to see both the structure of your blood vessels and how blood flows through them in real time.

At United Vein & Vascular Centers, duplex ultrasound is one of the most important tools we use to diagnose vein and arterial conditions accurately and safely.

This test helps identify the source of symptoms such as:

  • Leg pain or cramping
  • Hinchazón de las piernas o los tobillos
  • Heaviness or fatigue
  • Varices visibles
  • Skin discoloration or wounds
  • Cold feet or slow-healing sores

How Does Duplex Ultrasound Work?

A duplex ultrasound combines two types of ultrasound technology:

1. Traditional Ultrasound
Creates detailed images of your veins and arteries.

2. Doppler Ultrasound
Measures the speed and direction of blood flow within those vessels.

Together, these technologies allow our vascular specialists to:

  • Detect faulty vein valves
  • Identify blood clots
  • Measure narrowed or blocked arteries
  • Evaluate circulation problems
  • Pinpoint the exact source of symptoms

Because the test shows blood flow in real time, it gives your physician precise information to guide treatment planning.

What Conditions Can Duplex Ultrasound Diagnose?

Duplex ultrasound is commonly used to evaluate:

Venous Conditions

Condiciones arteriales

This diagnostic step ensures treatment is medically appropriate and targeted, not cosmetic or unnecessary.

What to Expect During Your Appointment

A duplex ultrasound is performed in-office and is non-invasive, painless, and radiation-free.

During the test:

1. You’ll stand comfortably on an exam table.
2. A clear gel is applied to the skin.
3. A small handheld device (transducer) is moved over the area being examined.
4. Images and blood flow measurements appear instantly on the screen.

The test typically takes 30 minutes.
You can return to normal activities immediately afterward.

Schedule a Vascular Evaluation

Why Duplex Ultrasound Matters

Many vein and vascular conditions are progressive. Symptoms may start mildly, such as heaviness or minor swelling, but can worsen over time without evaluation.

Duplex ultrasound allows us to detect vascular problems early, confirm medical necessity for treatment, and develop personalized care plans tailored to each patient’s condition. It also enables our physicians to monitor progress after procedures to ensure optimal results. Accurate diagnosis is the foundation of effective vascular care.

When Should You Consider a Duplex Ultrasound?

You may benefit from evaluation if you experience:

  • Persistent leg pain or cramping
  • Hinchazón que empeora a lo largo del día
  • Venas visibles o abultadas
  • Skin changes around the ankles
  • Heridas que no cicatrizan
  • Cold or numb feet

If symptoms interfere with your daily comfort or mobility, a vascular evaluation may be appropriate.
