Varicose Vein Removal Surgery: How Long Does It Actually Take?

Many women, especially those who are aging, can develop varicose veins. The bulging veins and discoloration can quickly become a cosmetic nightmare for some, who believe them to be unsightly. However, some vein conditions aren’t just cosmetic issues. They can present discomfort, tightness, pain, pressure and more.

Varicose vein treatments are designed to alleviate the symptoms that present themselves in patients with these conditions. One such type of treatment is vein removal. Yes, it sounds intimidating, but luckily it’s a simple procedure.

How long does a varicose veins treatment take?

Venous disease treatments are generally simple and quick. They’re minimally invasive and cost effective and require little recovery time. So, how quick are they actually?

  • Endovenous laser ablation — Endovenous laser ablation is a minimally invasive treatment option for varicose veins. During this procedure, which is typically carried out in-office, a laser is used to close the vein and cause it to eventually disappear. It generally can take up to an hour to complete this procedure, but it can be done in a shorter amount of time depending on the case.
  • Microphlebectomy — A microphlebectomy, also known by some as an ambulatory phlebectomy, is a treatment for bulging veins where tiny incisions are made along the length of the vein. Then, a small hook is used to extract the vein through the incisions. The average amount of time it takes to complete this procedure is about 45 minutes, but this may vary depending on the severity of the varicose veins.

Seek vein removal from our board-certified doctors

You may not only be concerned about how long your vein procedure may take. You may also be worried about the experience your doctor has with such procedures. The key is to look for vein specialists who are board-certified as this ensures they’ve been trained and tested to specifically help with your vein condition.

Not sure if your doctor is certified? You can visit the American Board of Surgery’s website and type your physician’s name into their Check a Certification tool to find out.
