Microphlebectomy
Microphlebectomy (also known as ambulatory phlebectomy) is a minimally invasive procedure used to remove bulging varicose veins just beneath the skin. It’s often performed alongside radiofrequency ablation (RFA) to enhance both health and cosmetic outcomes. During the procedure, one of our vein specialists makes a series of tiny punctures near the vein and carefully removes the affected vessel using a specialized tool.
This outpatient treatment requires no stitches and leaves minimal scarring, making it a safe and effective option for patients who want to relieve symptoms and improve the appearance of their legs without the need for traditional surgery.

Ideal Candidates for Ambulatory Phlebectomy
Microphlebectomy is best suited for individuals with large, visible varicose veins near the surface of the skin, typically in the legs. Ideal candidates are in generally good health, maintain a healthy weight, and do not smoke.
As the procedure targets veins that can be seen and accessed through small punctures, it’s important that the varicose veins are clearly visible and accessible. Patients with blood clotting disorders or other vascular conditions may not be eligible and should discuss alternative treatment options with their provider.

What to Expect and How to Prepare for Microphlebectomy
Microphlebectomy is a minimally invasive outpatient procedure that does not require large incisions or general anesthesia. You’ll remain awake and comfortable throughout the treatment, which is performed right in our clinic.
Here’s what to expect during the procedure:
- A local anesthetic is applied along the length of the targeted vein to ensure comfort.
- Tiny punctures (less than ¼ inch) are made in the skin.
- A specialized tool is used to remove the problematic vein through these small incisions.
- The entire procedure typically takes 45 to 60 minutes.
Before your treatment:
Your provider will guide you through preparation during your pre-op consultation. You may be advised to:
- Adjust your medication routine
- Avoid certain supplements
- Wear loose-fitting clothing on the day of your appointment
Following these steps will help ensure a smooth and comfortable experience.

After the Procedure
Because the incisions made during microphlebectomy are so small, stitches are typically not required. Each tiny puncture is simply closed with an adhesive bandage, and a compression wrap is applied to support the healing process.
After your procedure, you’ll be fitted with prescription-strength compression stockings, which should be worn for approximately two weeks to help reduce swelling and promote proper blood flow.
Most patients are able to resume normal daily activities the same day. To encourage a smooth recovery and optimal circulation, walking and light movement are strongly recommended.
A few things to keep in mind during recovery:
- Incisions typically heal without visible scarring
- It’s common to feel firm, tender areas under the skin—this is a sign the treated vein is closing
- Mild redness or sensitivity around the area is also normal and should resolve with time
Your provider will give you detailed aftercare instructions to support a smooth recovery.
Frequently Asked Questions
Microphlebectomy is a minimally invasive procedure performed using local anesthesia to ensure patient comfort. Most people report little to no pain during the procedure and only mild soreness or bruising afterward, which typically resolves quickly.
Once a vein is removed during microphlebectomy, it does not grow back. However, new varicose veins can develop over time, especially if underlying venous insufficiency is not treated. Your provider may recommend combining this procedure with other treatments like RFA for more lasting results.
Recovery is generally quick. Most patients are able to return to normal daily activities within 24 hours. You’ll be asked to wear compression stockings for about two weeks and keep active to support proper healing and circulation.
