Atherectomy Treatment

An atherectomy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure that removes plaque buildup from the arteries. This procedure restores blood flow to the heart for improved circulation and health and is often recommended for patients with peripheral arterial disease (PAD).

The Benefits of Atherectomy

There are several benefits of atherectomy for arterial issues, including:

  • Pain relief: An atherectomy often provides near-instant pain relief once the physician restores blood flow to your heart muscles.
  • Fast recovery: Atherectomy treatment is minimally invasive, allowing you to recover quickly and return to your daily life.
  • Improved circulation: Improved circulation reduces pain while giving you more energy, making physical activity easier.

What to Expect During an Atherectomy

At United Vein & Vascular Centers, one of our board-certified vascular specialists will perform your atherectomy at one of our state-of-the-art treatment centers. We begin by administering a sedative and local anesthetic so you are comfortable during the procedure.

Once you are relaxed, the doctor inserts a laser-tipped catheter into your artery via your wrist, arm, upper thigh or groin. Using X-ray imaging, they thread the catheter into the artery toward the blockage. After inserting a special dye to locate the plaque buildup, they use the laser to remove it.

Your doctor might also perform an angioplasty or insert a stent to ensure the artery remains open before removing the catheter.

Recovery After an Atherectomy

After your atherectomy procedure, you will lie on your back in a comfortable recovery area for three to six hours. During this time, our attentive medical professionals will monitor you for bleeding or other complications and track your vitals. Your physician might conduct another angiography to confirm the atherectomy was successful.

Full recovery after an atherectomy usually takes a few days. After this time and with your physician’s approval, you can confidently resume most elements of your daily routine. You will receive detailed instructions on activities that are safe following the operation, but you should call your doctor immediately if you notice unusual bleeding, bruising or swelling.

In the meantime, be sure to avoid vigorous exercise or lifting heavy objects for at least a few weeks. Take any medications prescribed by your doctor as directed, stay hydrated and eat plenty of nutritious foods to aid your recovery.
