JAMES FERNAU, M.D.

Dr. James Fernau is a board-certified general surgeon and vein specialist with more than 30 years of experience performing advanced surgical procedures and helping patients improve their health, confidence, and quality of life. Throughout his career, he has combined surgical precision with a strong commitment to patient education, safety, and personalized care.

Dr. Fernau earned his medical degree from the University of Utah before completing a general surgery residency at Mount Carmel Medical Center and a residency in Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh. He went on to complete advanced fellowship training in aesthetic surgery under internationally recognized leaders in cosmetic surgery in Virginia Beach, Virginia, and Ribeirão Preto, Brazil, further refining his expertise in advanced surgical techniques.

Over the course of his career, Dr. Fernau has served as Director of a private plastic surgery practice for more than 25 years while also holding academic appointments as an Assistant Professor of Plastic Surgery. In addition to caring for patients, he has dedicated much of his career to educating medical students, residents, fellows, physician assistant students, and nursing professionals, reflecting his passion for mentorship and advancing surgical education.

Dr. Fernau is recognized nationally for his contributions to aesthetic surgery and patient safety. He has received numerous honors from The Aesthetic Society, including awards for member education, patient safety, and excellence in scientific presentation. He has also maintained board certification through continuous recertification, achieving exceptional examination scores that reflect his ongoing commitment to clinical excellence and lifelong learning.
