What does lymphedema pain feel like?

Lymphedema is swelling caused by limited drainage of the lymphatic system. It most often affects the legs, but can also involve the arms, chest, neck, and genitals. Lymphedema pain can feel like a range of sensations—here’s what patients commonly report.

What can lymphedema pain feel like?

It can be hard to describe exactly, but many people experience one or more of the following:

  • Swelling — Fluids that would normally drain through lymph nodes become trapped in the limbs, causing visible swelling that may be painful or uncomfortable.
  • Heaviness — Some people don’t feel sharp pain, but rather a persistent heaviness in the affected limb(s).
  • Restlessness — A restless sensation, including restless leg syndrome, is frequently reported.
  • Aching, tingling, numbness — Throbbing, “pins and needles,” or reduced sensation can occur.
  • Tightness — The skin and tissues may feel tight; this can be painful for some and uncomfortable for others.
