Dr. Umang Patel discusses his career in vein medicine at United Vein & Vascular Centers.

For Dr. Umang Patel, choosing a career in medicine started with a simple goal: helping people feel better and live better.

Throughout his medical training, he found himself drawn to work that combined clinical problem-solving, hands-on care, and meaningful relationships with patients. Eventually, he discovered a specialty that brought all three together: vein medicine.

Finding His Place in Vein Care

Venous disease can have a significant impact on a patient’s everyday life. Pain, swelling, heaviness, skin changes, and other symptoms can gradually limit mobility and affect overall well-being. Yet many patients simply learn to live with them.

That reality stood out to Dr. Patel.

“For me, the turning point was recognizing that vein care offered the opportunity to combine everything I value about medicine: listening carefully to patients, solving challenging clinical problems, and seeing a tangible improvement in someone’s quality of life.”

The ability to treat underlying venous disease through minimally invasive procedures—and often see meaningful improvements in how patients feel and function—made the specialty particularly rewarding.

It also offered the kind of physician-patient relationship Dr. Patel wanted to maintain throughout his career.

Finding the Right Place to Practice

When Dr. Patel began considering his next career opportunity, he wasn’t simply looking for another place to practice medicine. He wanted an organization that shared his commitment to high-quality, patient-centered care.

United Vein & Vascular Centers stood out for its focus on expanding access to specialized vein care while giving physicians the clinical and operational support needed to focus on their patients.

“The culture and collaborative environment were important factors for me,” Dr. Patel says. “Ultimately, it felt like a place where I could focus on taking care of patients properly and continuing to grow as a physician, all while being supported by a team that shares that same vision.”

Today, that support is an important part of what makes his work fulfilling.

When Better Vein Health Means Getting Part of Your Life Back

For Dr. Patel, some of the most meaningful outcomes aren’t simply the ones visible on an ultrasound. They’re the changes patients experience when they return to their everyday lives.

He recalls one patient who had lived with leg pain, swelling, and heaviness for years. Managing those symptoms had become part of his normal routine, including taking multiple medications.

Following treatment, that changed significantly.

The patient was able to walk more, sleep better, and get through his day without constantly worrying about his legs. His reliance on medication to manage his symptoms also decreased substantially.

“These moments are incredibly meaningful because the improvement is not just something we see on an ultrasound or in a clinical measurement,” Dr. Patel says. “It’s something the patient feels in their everyday life.”

Those outcomes continue to reinforce why he chose the specialty.

A Career Physicians May Not Have Considered

For physicians contemplating a career change, vein medicine may not always be the first specialty that comes to mind. Dr. Patel encourages them to take a closer look.

It offers the opportunity to combine clinical expertise, procedural medicine, problem-solving, and ongoing patient relationships, all while making a tangible difference in quality of life.

For physicians considering UVVC specifically, Dr. Patel believes the infrastructure surrounding the physician is equally important.

“Having experienced clinical and operational teams and an organization that understands the importance of the patient experience allows you to focus on what matters most: taking care of your patients.”

It is also an environment where physicians can continue developing their skills, building relationships within their communities, and growing their practices with an experienced team behind them.

Looking Ahead

As technology advances and minimally invasive treatment options continue to evolve, Dr. Patel sees tremendous opportunity ahead for vein medicine.

He is particularly excited about reaching patients who have spent years living with symptoms without realizing an underlying condition may be treatable.

At UVVC, that means continuing to expand access to specialized care while evolving alongside the field.

Personally, Dr. Patel looks forward to refining his skills, taking on new challenges, and continuing to build relationships with patients and colleagues.

For Dr. Patel, that brings his career back to the same motivation that first led him to medicine: helping people live healthier, more comfortable lives.
