What Is A Venous Doppler Ultrasound?
A venous Doppler ultrasound is a noninvasive diagnostic test that helps evaluate how blood moves through the veins and arteries. Using sound waves, this imaging technology allows providers to assess circulation in real time and identify potential vascular concerns that may be contributing to symptoms.

What Does a Venous Doppler Ultrasound Show?
A venous Doppler ultrasound creates sound waves to measure how blood flows through the body’s blood vessels. While a standard ultrasound creates images of internal structures, venous Doppler ultrasound shows how blood is moving through veins and arteries.
This information can help your provider evaluate whether blood is flowing normally or whether there may be signs of reflux, narrowing, blockage, clotting, or other circulation-related issues.
Why Doppler Ultrasound May Be Recommended
Many vein and vascular conditions can cause symptoms that are easy to dismiss as normal fatigue, aging, or the result of standing or sitting too long. Doppler ultrasound helps provide a clearer picture of what may be happening beneath the surface.
A Doppler ultrasound may be recommended if you are experiencing:

What Can Doppler Ultrasound Help Evaluate?
Doppler ultrasound can be used to evaluate both vein and artery health, depending on your symptoms and medical needs.
For vein conditions, Doppler ultrasound can help assess how well the valves inside your veins are working. When these valves become weakened or damaged, blood can flow backward and pool in the legs. This is known as venous reflux and may contribute to chronic venous insufficiency, varicose veins, swelling, aching, and leg heaviness.
For vascular conditions, Doppler ultrasound can help assess blood flow through the arteries. This may be important when symptoms suggest reduced circulation, narrowing, or blockage in the arteries.
What to Expect During a Venous Doppler Ultrasound
A Doppler ultrasound is performed in-office and does not require incisions, needles, or radiation. During the exam, ultrasound gel is applied to the skin, and a handheld device called a transducer is moved over the area being evaluated.
You may hear sound from the ultrasound machine as it measures blood flow. Depending on the type of exam, you may be asked to lie down, stand, or change positions so your care team can evaluate circulation from different angles.
After the exam, your provider will review the findings and explain what they may mean for your symptoms and care options.

If a circulation issue is identified, your provider can discuss next steps based on your diagnosis, symptoms, and overall health. This may include conservative recommendations, additional testing, or minimally invasive treatment options when clinically appropriate.
