When should you look for a vein specialist?

Not sure what necessitates a trip to see a vein specialist near you? One good reason to see a specialist is if you need treatment for a condition called chronic venous insufficiency (CVI). This condition can manifest in a few different ways, but if you suspect this may be what you’re dealing with, check out the list of CVI symptoms below.

What are some CVI signs that mean you should see a vein specialist?

  • Varicose veinsVaricose veins can be identified as those bulging and swollen tracts of squiggly veins underneath your skin. They most often occur on the backs of the legs. They may not have coloration, or they can appear blue or purple in color.
  • Pain or discomfort after walking or standing — Another telltale sign of a condition like chronic venous insufficiency is pain or discomfort after standing or walking for long periods of time. This indicates that the circulation through the legs is weak, most often from venous issues. If you have pain in your legs, it’s definitely time for you to see a vein specialist near you.
  • Swelling in the feet, ankles or legs — If your feet, ankles or legs are swollen, this could also indicate a venous insufficiency. Swelling usually occurs when blood begins to pool in the bottoms of the legs.
  • Changes in the skin — If you notice any changes in your skin, this is one of the symptoms of chronic venous insufficiency. More specifically, these skin changes include changes in sensation like dryness and/or itchiness, and especially changes in color like new red or brown coloration.
