How Laser Ablation Helps Ease Varicose Veins Symptoms

Varicose veins are bulging, twisty veins that have become damaged and don’t properly transport blood through the body as they should. The cause of this condition isn’t definitively known. For many people, having varicose veins is a cosmetic problem that doesn’t cause them any physical symptoms other than large and noticeable veins. For others, varicose veins come with a plethora of uncomfortable and even painful symptoms.

How can laser treatment be used to help varicose veins?

Laser treatment for varicose veins can be especially effective for many patients. Endovenous laser ablation (EVLA) is a type of laser treatment for varicose veins. It’s a fairly common procedure for this condition. Fortunately, endovenous laser ablation is a minimally invasive procedure that is usually carried out in a vein and vascular specialist’s office. The procedure involves using the heat from a specialized laser to close off the ends of a damaged vein and reroute blood to other functional veins. The procedure should only take about 30 to 60 minutes to complete. Immediately afterward, your specialist will ask you to stand up and walk around. The aftereffects of endovenous laser ablation are minimal, and you should be able to return to normal activities fairly quickly.
