Are varicose veins dangerous?

Varicose veins are veins that most often appear on the backs of the legs in the form of large, swollen tracts of veins that have risen close to the surface of the skin. They can be blue, purple or reddish in color. They can be mostly asymptomatic and cause no physical discomfort for some people; for others, varicose veins can be a constant source of pain and discomfort. Sometimes varicose veins can indicate large underlying issues with your circulatory health, like chronic venous insufficiency. Here’s what else you should know about varicose veins and how they can affect your general health.

Can varicose veins be dangerous to my health?

Most often, the answer is no, varicose veins aren’t dangerous and usually don’t pose a risk to your health — if they’re appropriately treated by a vein specialist. Most concern stems from the physical appearance, but in some cases, this condition can cause uncomfortable and even painful symptoms. Even so, it’s usually not dangerous. Some of the symptoms of this condition may include swelling, heaviness, tingling, cramping, itching and skin discoloration, to name a few. If your symptoms aren’t treated, you may have an increased risk of experiencing complications that could become potentially life-threatening. Getting treated by a specialist is the best way to avoid complications and keep your symptoms manageable.
