Why Can Veins Be Green Sometimes? | Vein Science | UVVC

Why do some of my veins appear to be green?

You’ve definitely noticed that some areas of your body have veins that are easily visible underneath your skin. For some, these veins appear blue; for others, they seem green. They’re also more visible in people with fairer skin tones. If you’re interested in learning what causes veins to appear green under the skin, keep reading.

What causes veins to look like they’re colored green?

  • Light reflection — These veins that appear green in color aren’t actually green. They just look that way as a result of the way that light reflects off your veins and through your skin. Green and blue have a shorter wavelength than red, which is why it’s easier for you to see those colors on your body. Whether they appear blue or green can also depend on the undertone of your skin, which might explain why some people’s veins are blue and some have green veins instead.

What about green veins that are bulging?

If you can see green or bluish veins under the surface of your skin that are also bulging and raveling under your skin, this could indicate that you have varicose veins. Varicose veins are those twisty, swollen veins that feel bumpy beneath your skin, most usually on the backs of your legs. They are actually damaged blood vessels that can’t transport blood back up out of the legs once it enters your lower limbs. Varicose veins are a progressive condition, meaning that they can’t be cured, but fortunately, they can be treated by a specialist who can help manage the recurring symptoms.
