Some of the Top Causes of Spider Veins | UVVC

What is the top cause of spider veins (and some others you should know)?

Spider veins are veins that have become noticeable close to the surface of the skin. They most often appear on the backs of the legs and have a purple or blue appearance. They stem out in multiple directions and may look squiggly. They’re thin veins, and they may appear slightly swollen.

They are similar to varicose veins, but they’re not to be confused. Some vein clinics only offer services to treat varicose veins that cause their patients pain or discomfort. Some cases of varicose veins and almost all cases of spider veins are considered cosmetic concerns. Spider veins often don’t cause much discomfort other than with physical appearance, which is why some clinics choose not to treat patients with these.

What are some of the top causes of spider veins?

  • Changes in hormones — If you’re recently had fluctuations in the levels of hormones in your body, this could bring about spider veins. It doesn’t happen in everyone who experiences hormone changes, but it could be the cause for some people.
  • Traumatic injury — Traumatic injury can, in some cases, be the cause of spider veins. An injury to the leg can interfere with blood vessels under the skin and cause injury to veins.
  • Family history — Another determinant of spider veins is family history. If someone in your family dealt with spider veins, you may have a higher risk of developing them as well.
