Iliac Vein Symptoms | How It Affects the Legs | UVVC

Why the iliac veins might be behind your leg symptoms

An iliac vein is a blood vessel that can be found in the abdomen. It’s similar to the iliac artery but notably separate. These veins can become blocked or narrowed. Blockages are most often caused by deep vein thrombosis, which is another word for a blood clot. When the veins become narrowed, it’s typically because of compression on the vein from the spine, a cyst, the iliac artery or another source.

When iliac veins become compressed by the iliac artery, this results in a condition known as May-Thurner syndrome. It can negatively impact flood flow through your body. To learn more about the symptoms of iliac vein compression, keep reading below.
