Hemosiderin Staining & Chronic Venous Insufficiency

By August 1, 2023December 19th, 2023Uncategorized

What is hemosiderin staining?

Hemosiderin is a type of staining that is often associated with circulatory issues. It’s most often a staining of the skin that appears brown, black and even yellow. The stains may at first appear to look like bruises. Hemosiderin happens when the iron is released from hemoglobin and becomes trapped under areas of the skin.

Chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) is a condition in which the veins in the leg struggle to function as they should and the blood in the legs cannot circulate through the rest of the body as it should. It typically results in swelling and discoloration of the affected areas.

To learn more about the connection between hemosiderin and chronic venous insufficiency, keep reading below.

What are the symptoms of hemosiderin?

  • Blood pooled at the bottom of the legs and ankles.
  • Skin discoloration

Why is hemosiderin staining important to people with CVI?

This type of skin staining is usually indicative of underlying chronic circulatory and cardiovascular conditions that may lead to other issues. If you experience the symptoms of hemosiderin, you should consider consulting with a specialist for an evaluation of your vascular and circulatory health. If left untreated, your hemosiderin could develop further and result in other skin conditions associated with damage to blood vessels, including dermatitis and venous ulcers.

If you’re someone with chronic venous insufficiency, your skin staining could be a symptom of your condition. If your skin discoloration is new or worsening, this is likely a sign that you should schedule an appointment with a specialist for more intensive medical attention and treatment. Fortunately, vascular specialists can help those with hemosiderin and CVI manage their symptoms and improve their quality of life.
