What is Chronic Venous Insufficiency?

Chronic venous insufficiency is considered a venous disease that results in damaged veins. The damaged veins lead to reduced blood flow, among other things, that can lead to further issues within the vascular system. The types of veins that most often experience damage include perforating veins, deep veins and superficial veins.

What are the symptoms of chronic venous insufficiency?

  • Varicose veins — Chronic venous insufficiency can lead to varicose veins, which can look unsightly and cause heaviness, achiness, and itching in the affected area.
  • Swelling — This condition frequently leads to swelling, which can become uncomfortable and even cause significant leg pain if left untreated.
  • Changes in skin coloration and texture — Another common symptom of chronic venous insufficiency is that the skin can become discolored and appear red or brown, and it can even become dry and rough in texture.

Can chronic venous insufficiency be attributed to chronic leg pain?

Chronic venous insufficiency can be attributed to recurring leg pain. The pain is mostly caused by the swelling of the legs; the swelling happens when blood pools in the legs and feet because the blood can’t travel through the veins as it should. The blood pools and the pressure in the legs increases, and this can cause chronic leg pain for those with this condition. The pain can start off manageable at first, but if left untreated, over time it can quickly become unmanageable. It’s recommended that chronic venous insufficiency sufferers seek treatment from a vein and vascular specialist to help manage their symptoms and improve their quality of life.
