Hemorrhoid Embolization

Hemorrhoid embolization is a minimally invasive vascular outpatient procedure that treats symptomatic internal hemorrhoids. This procedure takes less than 60 minutes and allows the patient to return home from United Vein & Vascular Centers the same day.

An interventional radiologist uses X-ray imaging to place a small catheter into the artery supplying blood to the hemorrhoid. Once in place, the radiologist injects small particles, called embolic agents, into the vessel feeding the hemorrhoid to block the blood flow. Loss of blood flow shrinks the hemorrhoid, providing relief from symptoms. Hemorrhoid embolization shrinks the hemorrhoidal tissue gradually over the course of several weeks.

Hemorrhoid embolization is an effective and safe procedure with minimal risk of serious side effects.

Symptoms of Hemorrhoids

  • Painless rectal bleeding
  • Itching or irritation around the anus
  • Bright red blood on the toilet tissue, stool, or in the toilet bowl
  • Swelling or a lump around the anus
  • Painful bowel movements

If left untreated, hemorrhoids can become worse and cause additional complications such as blood clots, infection, and tissue damage. To help prevent hemorrhoids, it is important to have regular exercise, maintain a healthy diet that is high in fiber, and drink plenty of water to keep stools soft and easily passed. When passing stools, make sure not to strain or push too hard, as this can further aggravate the condition.

Benefits of Hemorrhoid Embolization

Both procedures may cause pain or discomfort; however, this is typically mild and short-lived with embolization:

  • Embolization is a minimally invasive procedure (vs. traditional being an invasive surgery)
  • Full recovery in 1-2 days (vs. a full recovery in 2-6 weeks)
  • Requires one small incision and no stitches (vs. more extensive incisions)
  • Lower risk of infection and bleeding (vs. higher risk of infection and bleeding)
  • Can return home after the procedure (vs. requiring a few-day hospital stay)
  • Conscious sedation (vs. requiring general anesthesia)

There are many factors to consider when determining which procedure is best for you, such as the severity of your hemorrhoid symptoms and your overall health. Contact us today about which option is right for you.
